The team at our GMC service center provides high-quality care and parts you can rely on, and the important information you need to care for your vehicle between appointments. Here’s a closer look at what to do if you get stuck in the snow.
Clear a Path
One of the first steps you want to take if your vehicle gets stuck is to make room. Clear a path around each of the tires to the best of your ability and give yourself the best possible egress to the road or driveway. It can also be useful to stomp or push down on the snow, to make it a harder surface with more traction for your tires.
Most importantly, make sure your tailpipe is completely clear. If carbon dioxide can’t be released through the tailpipe, it will go back into the vehicle, which can be very dangerous.
Disengage Traction Control
Traction control is a safety mechanism designed to prevent slippage on the road, and you want to drive with it on most of the time. That said, if your vehicle is stuck, it’s time to turn the traction control setting off. If your vehicle is stuck, traction control can actually cause more wheel spin and dig your vehicle further into the snow.
Move Forward and Back
One of the best techniques for getting out of a snowbank or icy spot is to rock your car. Drive forward and back, then forward and back again. Ideally, this will rock your vehicle enough to gain traction and get out of the spot.
