What is EV Charging Station Etiquette?
There are a few things to keep in mind to be a thoughtful EV charging station user. First, never park in an EV charging station parking spot unless you are charging your vehicle. Never use an EV charging spot as a regular parking spot.
Every EV charging station comes with a phone app. Be sure to monitor your charging on the app and repark your car if you have reached a full charge. When you reach 80 percent charge, switch to the lower L2 charging level to free up electricity for other users.
Can I Use my Car While it is Charging?
Yes! An electric car or plug-in hybrid vehicle is safe to use while the vehicle is plugged in to charge. These vehicles are designed to not allow the powertrain to engage while charging. This means it is impossible for you to accelerate the vehicle if it is plugged in.
A few features will operate while the vehicle is charging. Think of this like when you are on power-saving mode with your cell phone. The infotainment system and temperature control settings will most likely turn on while charging, but that is about it.
Is it Safe to Drive my Electric Vehicle in the Winter?
Yes, drivers can certainly take their EV or PHEV for a spin in the winter safely. However, it is worth memorizing that these vehicles lose their charge 20 percent faster in cold weather. The battery works harder to power heat and defrost settings, for example. This depletes the battery.
When driving an eco-friendly vehicle in the winter, consider planning more frequent stops to charge the battery more often. Or choose shorter trips during the winter season in your EV or PHEV. Don’t get stranded during winter weather and pay close attention to your battery life.
